The Employee Communications teams deliver an excellent communications experience for all the colleague groups working at Barclays. Working in partnership with senior leaders and other professional specialists such as HR, the team designs and delivers communication approaches that both support the business to meet its commercial objectives and instil long-term colleague engagement.

Overall purpose of role
Working as part of the broader Employee Communications team, the role holder will, through a business partnership approach:
provide strategic site-related communications and colleague engagement support to key stakeholders and the Northampton Steering Committee
develop an internal communications plan which aligns to Barclays’ Location Strategy and Group milestones, creates opportunities to strengthen the vibrant culture in Northampton and maximises engagement throughout a period of sustained and positive change
work in partnership with site leadership and Employee Communications teams (particularly Barclaycard, Chief Operating Office and Functions), relevant HR, Corporate Real Estate Solutions, Citizenship, Diversity & Inclusion and Early Careers teams to drive colleague and community engagement in Northampton
create opportunities for Barclays’ leadership, clients, and business partners to engage with colleagues and work with Employee Communications teams to ensure alignment to the bank’s overall strategic narrative, purpose and values, with an unwavering focus on strategic outcomes
liaise with the Government Relations and Media Relations teams, and the appropriate local Barclays Head of Corporate Affairs (HOCA) as appropriate, to ensure consistent key messaging for all regional external events which Barclays attends or hosts


The role holder will develop and own end-to-end delivery of strategic communications and complex projects. Sample communication topics may include, but are not limited to: how colleagues can work with the campus SteerCo to drive the local culture plan; how colleagues can leverage professional development opportunities; how colleagues can continue to deliver against Barclays’ Citizenship and Diversity agendas and support regional leadership and Early Careers activities. They will also be responsible for communications that promote the execution of strategic priorities and projects, and support specific campaigns to embed core behaviours that are central to Barclays’ success.

Key Accountabilities
Develop and own creative and engaging leadership communication and colleague engagement strategies that align with business objectives, working with colleagues and stakeholders to deliver timely, targeted and effective communications.

Coordinate all communication activity across the site, including drafting content for the Barclays Now, site-wide emails, intranet articles, plasma screens, posters, and major events for senior leaders, colleagues, clients, and community members.

Identify potential issues that could impact other Barclays’ teams, and work with appropriate colleagues to minimise impact by planning and delivering practical and effective communications.

Seek constant improvement in communications by measuring their effectiveness and recommending improvements.

Stakeholder Management and Leadership
The role holder will report to the Director, Change Employee Communications.

The role holder will interact with the Northampton site leadership, including the Site Lead, Steering Committee and other relevant Barclaycard, Chief Operating Office, and Functions leadership teams based at the site. The role holder will work closely with a variety of both senior leadership and more junior colleagues at the site. As such, the role holder should be comfortable interacting regularly with, and providing feedback to them.

The role holder should be confident and comfortable working in a matrix environment and liaising with both internal and external stakeholders.

As the role has stakeholders based in multiple locations, the role holder should be an exceptionally strong team player.

Decision-making and Problem Solving
The Employee Communications – Northampton Campus role requires constant evaluative judgement and analytical skills. These include, but are not limited to, how, when and why specific communications are delivered to colleagues; how, when and why senior management at the site are engaging with colleagues and the community; and how, when and why communications incorporate Barclays’ overall strategic narrative, the COO Mindset, and any relevant business-level strategic narrative.

Risk and Control Objective
Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Enterprise Wide Risk Management Framework and internal Barclays Policies and Policy Standards.

Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree (BA/BS) in a relevant area such as English, PR, or Economics.
Employee communications and engagement experience (in-house or agency)
Ideally indirect or direct experience of technology or operations within a highly matrixed, global organisation.
Experience of Financial Services would be very valuable.

Desirable skills/Preferred Qualifications:
Team oriented, strong communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
Blend of internal and external communication skills and well versed in employee engagement. strategies and their impact on culture and sustainable performance.
Creative and entrepreneurial.
Ability to influence, to work autonomously but within a matrix team structure, to navigate a complex organisation.
